An hour and a half filled with a mix of old and new, down-tempo and up-tempo, the genius that is Spencer Krug, and epicness. Sunset Rubdown gave one of the best efforts that I’ve seen from a band.

Handsome Furs – July 6 – Great Scott
1. Legal tender
2. Talking hotel arbat blues
3. All we want baby is everything
4. Evangeline
5. I’m confused
6. White city extended

10. Dead and rural
11. Agony

There was no limit to the amount of energy Dan Boeckner and wife Alexei Perry brought with them. Alexei was hyperventilating for most of the night while Dan was extremely thankful for a great crowd. Greg, the secret third member of the band, joined the two on stage for a couple of songs, managing to be a drunken disgrace…but it didn’t seem like Dan or Alexei hated it. Speaking of hate…there wasn’t anything to hate from my perspective. It was delightful to hear “Dead and Rural” as the encore after the crowd relentlessly cheered for the two to come back to the stage.

Revisionist History: Radical Republican

“Marriage does involve very personal feelings, but this does not mean that it is merely a private matter. Whether it succeeds or fails, a marriage has a huge impact on the couple, their children, those around them, and the entire society. As an institution, marriage is the business of everyone in society. It takes more than emotion to hold a marriage together, as we have seen. – Catholic Answers”Because it is intrinsically disordered, we must not recognize homosexual activity as legitimate, and we must not give public approval to homosexual marriage because of the harm that will do to the institution of marriage and because of the social harm that will result from emptying marriage of its meaning. Perhaps the most serious social harm would be to children: the children of divorce and the children of same-sex couples, who will suffer all the ills we have discussed.

Earlier today, the Radical Republican party was criticized in a formal post. Not foreign to such accusations of stubbornness and narrow mindedness, the Radical Republican is once again subject to defending their beliefs that marriage between two sodomites is intrinsically evil.

Defending the Radical Republican movement at WHS is two of the leaders: Atulya Prateek and Glen Maganzini.

Radical Republican Movement: Narrow minded? It is called standing up for and backing your beliefs. So, believing in anything wrong or right is stubborn? That doesn’t make too much sense. Deep prejudice? Gay marriage is heretical. You can not say that we are being heretics, look at the sodomites! Opinions will be opinions. Thoughts will be thoughts. The path of moral correctness has no gays in it.

Religion, yes, is based on interpretation, but only to some extent. Religion and marriage are intertwined to a very deep extent. The prophets who wrote the Bible were intellects; they were the most brilliant.

Celebrating love? What celebration does a married couple achieve if they don’t reproduce?

Gay marriage is gross and disgusting; it should be banned. Grown men displaying affection (holding hands, kissing) is wrong.

Why do we bother with such an issue as gay marriage? It is actually quite simple. We are vehemently against it!

And I leave you with two other quotes that sum up our views on gay marriage from the same source:
The institution of marriage is precious. It enhances the health, longevity, and well-being of married couples. It increases the health, vocational success, and emotional well-being of children. In providing all these benefits, heterosexual marriage contributes to the happiness and prosperity of society. Marriage must, therefore, remain limited to one man and one woman who strive to keep their marriage exclusive, unconditional, permanent, and life-giving. Nothing less will ever meet the needs of the human person, because nothing less satisfies.

On a final note: name calling does not win arguments. Calling us stubborn bigots and homophobes only proves that you are dismissing the argument at hand.

What would the Étudiant become after this debacle last October? Well, for starters, nothing changed drastically. Ben and a newcomer, Chris DeCarlo, posted fairly regularly for the next several months. For a few months following the article’s publication, I was generally hated by the readers of the website. That kind of let up and everything is seemingly all good now. You might be asking…well is another controversial article in the making? The answer is no, not at the moment.

Band Spotlight: Sonic Youth

Genre: Alternative
History: Thurston Moore and his future wife, Kim Gordon, formed the band in 1981. The group went under the name The Arcadians before renaming themselves Sonic Youth, which is derived from Fred “Sonic” Smith of MC5 and and Big Youth, a reggae artist.
Musical Style: The band is known for its radical use of tuning. Sonic Youth has a lot influences from the hardcore scene, although this isn’t all that evident. My best description of their style is that they play harder than what we call “Indie” but are softer than the hardcore bands of the early’ 80s.
Top Songs:Bull in the Heather” – A classic that features Kim Gordon’s great vocals and is rated 48 out of 50 in NME’s Greatest Indie Anthems. “Incinerate” – A new song that is more “mainstream” than Sonic Youth’s earlier recordings. “Schizophrenia” – Another catchy tune that is very much upbeat.
Best Album: “Dirty” (1992)
Why You Should Listen To Sonic Youth: You don’t have to be fan of any particular genre to like Sonic Youth. With a little pop here, a little punk there, a little “indie” throw in, you should find at least one song that is suitable for you. The thing is that arguably all songs have an “alternative” edge in as so they breach what is considered mainstream in today’s genres.
